laxity (Rupture) of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb: skier’s thumb

Hand Surgery and Surgical Practice Alstertal Germany Hamburg Poppenbuettel – Tel: 040 602 30 06

Mostly resulting from falling while skiing, with a pole in the hand. That’s why it is called „skiers thumb“. But, any kind of trauma can result in this injury. The ligament desintegrates. Spontaneous healing is not possible; It will result in chronical instability which causes osteoarthrosis/arthritis in the base joint of the thumb.

Without OP no ligament repair possible

Operative procedure

In local Anaesthesia preparing the ligament, cleaning the joint/cartilange and Reunification of the ligament, resulting in stable conditions at the base joint.

What’s next

Splint for 6 weeks, mostly physiotherapy necessary. Almost complete sucess. However, in some cases the ligament looses stability again and extended repair with a ligament implant is necessary.
